I have dreams about white walls y’all. White shiplapped walls with tons of natural light shining in… I mean that is any Joanna Gaines fan’s dream right? We all know how realistic that is though…especially those of us with children…or fur babies. Having three dogs has required my husband and I to think long and hard about decisions in our home whether it is a wall color or a new piece of furniture. We have come to depend on 5 important things to help keep our home beautiful and our pups happy.
Washing and brushing our dogs
This can make such a difference if you are consistent! Unfortunately, my husband and I are human and tend to slack off when it comes to this tip. It really does help! Using a brush specifically to get that extra fur off like this one can cut down on the hair around your home – you will be amazed how much comes off!
Having a Back Patio or Deck
A back patio or outside area may not seem like a big deal but after living in a home with no separation from our yard, we have seen a huge difference. Just having that second area to leave behind some of the dirt and grass the dogs pick up in the backyard can help keep your floors so much cleaner. At our previous house, we had lots of bare spots in the yard and our two large dogs loved to run and play right smack in the middle of it (who needs grass anyway?) When they came inside, that dirt was spread throughout my home. We could not walk around without feeling the nit and grit under our feet. I would sweep daily and no matter what, I would have a ton to sweep up that afternoon. With all of our living area connected, it would get everywhere…and that’s just the dirt! Having a back patio has been great. They shake off so much before they even reach the threshold of our home.
Keep your animal friends in one area of the home
When we are home, we let our animals roam on the bottom floor of our home. Our master bedroom is actually on the 2nd floor of the house. I cannot tell you how nice it is to not have that hair sticking to everything while I am getting dressed or climbing into bed. When we are not home, we have a small mudroom that connects to our main entryway. We put up a tall baby gate to section off the room from the rest of the house. This helps contain the hair and dirt to one area.
Our Ikea Ektorp Sectional
I always knew I wanted a couch with a slipcover. I tend to make a mess no matter how careful I am. Adding in a house of dogs and eventually children = dim outcome for whatever couch we buy. We had purchased some beautiful dark grey couches for our previous home as our sweet Ally has dark red hair. We figured the dark color would hide hair as well as dirt. This was true until we brought home our sweet white haired Bailey (We avoid Petsmart on Saturdays at all costs now). No matter how much we fussed them to stay off , my husband is a sucker. He loves to pull the pups on the couch and cuddle them while we are watching television. When I came across a great deal on Craigslist for a barely used Ikea Ektorp Sectional, I jumped on the chance! I purchased a new light beige slipcover and it was like a brand new couch. This color works well to hide both of our animals hair. It has been wonderful for when they jump on it and dirty it too! A few days ago, our poor Ally cut her paw on some glass outside and decided to jump on my couch when I left the room. She got blood on every cushion. I swear you would have thought it was a crime scene. Luckily, I just pulled the slipcovers off and washed them. Good as new! I love that I can wash these when I have company over and I don’t have to apologize for all the hair they take with them when they leave.
Our secret weapon – the roomba
This item may be the NUMBER 1 reason I haven’t just thrown in the towel and accepted I will be forever covered in dog hair. Although it doesn’t completely solve the problem, it has helped keep up with the daily maintenance. We have a Roomba Pet Series but I am sure they all work well. I sweep about once a week as opposed to everyday like before. We run it daily – usually in the afternoon when we are home. On most, you can set a time for it to automatically run everyday. This is the most convenient and easy way to stay on top of it as sometimes I will forget to run it. Forewarning though – make sure your pets are completely potty trained before considering this option. Our dogs I’d say are about 90% trained as we rarely have accidents. Lets say said pup has an accident of the solid variety and I don’t notice it because lets face it, that is the last thing on my mind as I am running around late in the morning… It is not a fun afternoon when you get home.. Been there, done that 3x…..
These small 5 tips have given us the time to enjoy our new home without having to worry about cleaning all of the time. I hope they help you as well!
